Crisis Tool Kit- Part 6: INdiviualized Bereavement Plans

Develop policies and procedures for creating individualized plans to support grieving students. These plans should outline academic accommodations, counseling services, and other resources for the student. Included in this section:

  • How to make a student's individual bereavement plan when they return back to school.

  • Strategies for providing academic accommodations for grieving students such as flexible deadlines or reduced course loads or exception from certain projects or activities that may trigger the student.

  • The school will work with the student's family to develop an individualized plan to support the student's grieving process.

  • The plan will include counseling services and referrals for community resources such as counseling, grief camps, etc.

  • The plan will be reviewed and revised on an ongoing basis to ensure that it continues to meet the student's needs.

Example of School Policy: The school will work with the student's family to develop an individualized bereavement plan to support the student's grieving process. The plan will be developed in consultation with the student's counselor. It may include academic accommodations, such as flexible deadlines or reduced course loads, as well as counseling services and other resources. The plan will be reviewed and revised on an ongoing basis to ensure that it continues to meet the student's needs. The school will communicate the plan to the student's teachers and other relevant staff members to ensure that they are able to provide appropriate support.

Here is an example of an individualized student bereavement plan:

Student Name: John Doe Date of Birth: January 1, 2005 Grade: 9th

Summary: John is experiencing grief following the sudden death of his father. He is currently attending school but is struggling to concentrate and participate in class. John's mother has requested that the school develop an individualized plan to support him during this difficult time.

Academic Accommodations:

  • Flexible deadlines for assignments and projects

  • Permission to take breaks during class as needed

  • Reduced course load, if necessary

Counseling Services:

  • Individual counseling sessions with the school counselor twice per week. Pass to see the counselor whenever he needs.

  • Group counseling sessions with other students who are grieving, as appropriate

Other Support:

  • Referral to local grief support groups and mental health providers

  • Permission to leave school early, if needed, for counseling appointments or other support services

  • Permission to call home when needed.

Review and Revision:

  • The plan will be reviewed and revised on an ongoing basis, based on John's progress and changing needs.

  • The school counselor will communicate regularly with John's mother to ensure that the plan continues to meet John's needs.

This is just an example, and the specific accommodations and resources provided in an individualized plan will depend on the needs of the student and the resources available to the school. It's important to involve the student's family and the school's bereavement support team in developing the plan to ensure that it is tailored to the student's needs and provides the necessary support.
